Spring Makeup for Nuffnang Awards Night 2011

Nuffnang Awards is here again and I am lucky to be invited to the glamorous event. KYspeaks.com was nominated for Best Food Blog and we were both praying hard for a favorable result.

Dressed for the night

It has been some time since I last posted up any beauty tutorial. Mostly because I do not have a good camera or a photographer nowadays but recently, KY had purchased a really good lens for his Olympus E-PL3. With an extremely shallow depth of field, the photos are beautiful. My beauty blog is alive once more!

Refresher

I find it restricting if I only use a certain pigment or pallete from a brand each time for the tutorial. The reason being that everybody have different sets of makeup and it does not mean that you need to purchase a new makeup set every time you want a new look. Pigments come in different colors and to have a good start, you need to have as many colors as you can in either matte or shimmery finish. For dry skin and skin with acne problems, stay with matte colors as shimmery colors will aggravate your skin problems. So for my tutorials henceforth, I will only state the color of the pigment and you can use the closest color you have in your personal set.

Also, for new readers.. I usually skip right to the eye makeup. Therefore, prior to following any of my tutorials you would want to do the following:

  1. Apply moisturizer, lotion, base or any preparatory skin care serum. This will smooth your skin and defend it from all the plastic that will get on to your skin soon.
  2. Using a sponge, apply foundation all over your face thinly. It makes a lot of difference if you use a sponge compared to a brush or fingers. Sponge application is smoother where else brush application takes skill and fingers are for emergencies. For areas where you feel that you need more coverage to cover spots, you can apply a second layer. However, you do need to avoid your laugh lines and eye bag areas as this will aggravate your wrinkles and make your face looks dry.
  3. Using a concealer brush, dab concealer on spots and eye bags to make them disappear. It is easier to use cake concealer compared to liquid ones as they can cover your spots easier and quicker. For the eye bags area, it is a balance between looking good close up or far away. If you are making up for a photoshoot, by all means use more concealer as photoshop will be there to save the day but if you are going out for an afternoon brunch, make sure your application is thick enough to conceal but thin enough not to cake up.
  4. Using a face brush, brush on face powder on your face until your face appear matt and smooth. Do not use the sponge provided, the application will be too thick and unnatural.

Esmeria Eye Gel to reduce puffiness

This time, I use Esmeria’s Eye Gel on my eye bags. I will be wearing a lot of eye makeup and lashes later so I have to protect my eyes first. This new product helps to reduce deep wrinkles, firm the skin around the eyes, protect against dryness, protect DNA level and enhance healing.

Just a little will do

A little dab goes a long way, I let it set in for a few seconds.

Cool pink for the cheeks

Once the base and powdering is all done, I apply the blusher first and follow by contouring my face.

Cool pink for the brow bone

After that I begin by filling in my brows to a light brown color and apply pale pinkish purple color to the brow bone.

Rough in the white shade for the inner corner

Then I roughly apply some white pigment in the outer corner of my eye. I am not too worry about the shape as I will be filling this part again with white eyeliner later on.

PC161015 500x405 : Spring Makeup for Nuffnang Awards Night 2011

Dark pale blue for the base

I apply the dark pale blue for the lids, followed by shocking cerulean blue near the inner corners. The key to good makeup is blending. No matter what color you use, you must always blend the edges to be as soft as possible.

Dark purple for the shadows

After that I use a dark dark purple for the outer corners of the eye.

Dollywink lashes for top and bottom

For the finishing touch, I apply black eyeliner on my lash lines and white eyeliner in the outer corner of the eye. I stick heavy lashes to my eyes. If you are looking for a more dramatic makeup, make sure that the lashes you use have a soft bone or else you will be in pain halfway through your event.

Pale pink lip gloss to finish

I wanted the look to be a little more dramatic so I applied some dark brown pigment to the sides of my nose near my eyes. Then I finish off with nude lipliner and a pale pink lip gloss.

Simple hairdo

Hairdo is a simple affair of putting some clips and then I am off to the awards!

Janice and I at the Nuffnang Awards

I met Janice at the event, she was my client back when I still do blog design. KY’s blog didn’t win Best Food Blog but Ringo’s blog won Best Fashion Blog! I guess this means that one of the blogs that I designed had won! Yay! I am also currently trying to upgrade her blog but couldn’t find time yet. Boohoo.

A Drive in Lotus Evora

One of my hobbies is driving aggressively, whether in go kart or gt5 and of course, my car. I have never really blogged about this before though..hmm. Anyway, when KY got an invitation to drive the Lotus Evora to JB and back I was really excited and can imagined all the good things that will happen.

We arrived at Proton Malaysia to be greeted by some of the meanest cars around.

There were also a GTR during the trip, other cars include the Panamera, Ferrari and Lotus Europa. For the most, we get to drive a Lotus Evora.

Our ride for the trip

We were escorted by the Police in heavy traffic areas, thankfully. The car is great, handling it feels like the other cars on the road is parked. Kinda like the king of the road. The comfortable speed was around 160 km/h but I think our car managed to touch 260 km/h at a point. It is responsive and it took some time to get use to the brakes, which is much more responsive compared to my car of course.

In the passenger seat

I managed to drive on the way back and enjoyed the car immensely. The car is comfortable and sensible at high speeds but once you near 230 km/h you can see the mirror wobbling and shaking outside. Slightly scary but thats what you get when you have a need for speed.

Sketching during the trip

I never leave without my moleskine these days.. unless it couldn’t fit in my new bags. I have finally upgraded to leather bags you see, I used to only have ONE bag for EVERYTHING until it spoils. Regardless of the circumstances or event I use the same bag. How fashionable right.

Super Veloce and some Xmas decorations. icon smile : A Drive in Lotus Evora

It wasn’t a very good trip for me but the car made it worthwhile. Guess you can’t have it all when you are a girl. Best if you just sit in the passenger side and be a nice christmas decoration that we are made to be.

Late night study

Recently, I bought a great pile of books from Amazon. One of them was An Artist’s Complete Guide to Figure Drawing by Anthony Ryder. I just finished it and did a 5 hour sketch. He recommended that you do 12 sessions of 3 hours sketching but I don’t have that kinda dedication or patience and I was interested in the procedure instead of the realist result.

An Artist's Complete Guide to Figure Drawing

Anyway, I would greatly recommend this book for beginners who are interested in a different approach to drawing from life or photos. The modeling of the forms captivated me but while they are pretty, I am not very keen on creating art that are easily duplicated.

Restoring Deleted Files in FTP via Cpanel

Here I am at 2 am and there is an emergency email from a client. Went to the Mac and meddle with some files, trying to right some wrong. Feeling like a boss, I started deleting all the redundant files and fucking hell, I deleted the entire album of photos. From 2007 til 2011. All the photos gone.

I started sweating. Images of cigarettes appear in my head. I sat there stoned. Ok calm down. Solutions solutions.

Option 1// .trash Folder

I navigated to each folder and start looking for the deleted folders. Especially in the Trash can. Nothing there. /.trash folder is empty too. FML

Option 2// SSH

Ok ok. fine fine. I’ll just log in to the cPanel and give myself a SSH access. No login credentials were given for either. After trying a few times, holy moly I am in the cPanel. Fuck yea meme – I feel like a hacker. No time to gloat, SSH settings here we go.

Generate public keys.. private keys. I have done this before. but the instructions are swimming in front of me cuz I am too fucking stressed. Great. And what’s that search function for Terminal again. I can’t remember. Damn.

Screen Shot 2011 12 06 at 4.14.12 AM 500x227 : Restoring Deleted Files in FTP via Cpanel

Option 3//Backups in cPanel

Not likely to work. Since it wasn’t set up and there are just daily and partial downloads. But wait.

I mouse over the Home Directory button, I saw a tar.gz file with a DATE attached to it. I pumped my fist in the air and copy the link, change the date to the day before and downloaded it.

While I waited, I look at the server administrator email and did a google to find out who is the fucker that owns the server whom folders I deleted. Somehow I feel like it is all his fault. It is so nice to blame people at times like these.

Download is done. I unzipped. Took damn long. No luck, the date didn’t matter, it is a download of the current state of the files.

I have to try system backup. I click on the daily button. I am guessing they back up before I deleted the folders, since I made the changes 1 hour before. It couldn’t back up that fast. I had to download it before they started the new back up.

Downloading again. Paranoid, I search for the compression ratio of tar.gz. I calculated the current size and checked with my first download. It matched. Add that to the SQL file size and all I need is for this file to be WAY bigger than the first one in size. 641 mb. It’s a good sign.

I unzipped it. The files shown are weird. I saw a homedir.tar file. 634 mb. Hurray. I unzipped it.

YES.

It is all there. I lost a few files in the end but thats the recent files which I am sure my client still have them in her pc somewhere. In fact, this so called Daily backup is 5 days late. So I have 5 days worth of photos to apologize for in the end. Better than 4 years of photos.

Hope my experience help you if you are in a similar sticky situation.
